Psychology of Women
SOP 3742
This has been the GL course that has made me the most disappointed in our society. This is a bad thing but it is also a good thing because I am aware of the outdated gender and societal norms our society continues to abide by. I am a current student in this course but I know that by the time I finish the course I will have an increased ability to critique gender norms in my life and in my culture. In SOP 3742, we are exploring a perspective that is frequently excluded from standard psychology courses - women’s psychology. I have examined psychological issues affecting diverse women in a variety of contexts including health, work, family, sexuality and reproduction, and close relationships.
History of National Parks
IDH 3034
Fortunately, as an Honors College student, I have access to different types of honors courses. I decided to take IDH 3034 with Professor Anthony Rionda, the class was focused on the history of U.S. National Parks. In this IDH class, we were required to read New York Times best-selling author Connor Knightons book Leave Only Footprints, which explores his journey through every national park while he shares informative and entertaining notes from what turned out to be "the road trip of a lifetime". Professor Rionda invited Connor Knighton to speak to our class and I learned how important it is for our country to treasure lands that hold such cultural importance to so many people. One of my goals in life is to visit every single U.S. national park and absorb all the rich history these amazing national treasures have to offer.
In this course, we were tasked with writing a simulated "Build-a-Park" letter to a U.S. Senator. I chose Senator Maria Cantwell from the state of Washington and proposed to her why there should be a national park designation for Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Click here to read my proposal.
Intro to Global Gender and Women's Studies
WST 3015
The focus of this course was on the diverse experiences of gender all around the world. We discussed issues of race, class, and ethnicity while tying this back to gender inequalities. I learned more about how the experiences of women and gendered minorities are shaped in the U.S. while addressing the diverse economic, political and socio-cultural framework that allows this to continue.

After taking Introduction to Global Gender and Women's Studies I understand that I have a shared responsibility for solving local, global, international, and intercultural experiences of gender inequality.
Miami Politics
IDH 3035
Born and raised in Miami, I knew I had to take this course to learn more about Miami's rich culture. When many of us think of Miami we think of beaches, palm trees, houses on the water, and good food, but what many don't realize is that countless people had to die during the cocaine cowboy era for us to experience the fancy downtown buildings and big mansions. In this course, we learned about the 1980 Miami Riots that occurred in Liberty City and Overtown due to the murder of an American black man named Arthur McDuffie. We discussed racism in Miami and gentrification within many predominantly black communities in Miami. I learned that there is a coastal shelf that runs through Schenley Park and liberty city is on the higher part of the shelf. So, developers are now trying to gentrify liberty city since it is on the highest part of the coastal shelf, meaning when Miami experiences an extreme event and begins to submerge underwater Liberty City will remain the driest. This was my favorite university course and I find myself going back to my notes every so often to read interesting facts about my beloved city.
